The Man From UNCLE
Sep. 2nd, 2015 06:36 pmI was originally not planning to go and see The Man From UNCLE, mainly because I thought the casting was really bad. For some reason, Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer both occupied a "too bland, very dull" space in my head - despite the fact I haven't really seen either of them in anything. So, the thought of them attempting to play Napoleon Solo and Illya Kurakin was anathema to me.
However, many thanks to unbelievable2 for disabusing me of this notion and encouraging me to go. On a rainy Bank Holiday Sunday, I took refuge in the Waterloo IMAX and Man From UNCLE happened to start at exactly the right time - and I absolutely loved it!
I was perhaps helped out by low expectations, but I spent practically the whole film making involuntary (and quite loud) reaction noises - gasping, wincing, laughing cheering - you name it, I did it. And, wholly unexpectedly, I fell desperately in love with *both* the main characters. They were sweet, funny and adorable by turns - and boy, does Guy Ritchie know how to build a bromance!
There was rip-roaring action, excellent silliness, some fun twists and turns - and I just wanted to take Illya home and give him a big hug, while Solo can take me out to dinner any time!
Here's hoping for a sequel, which I really never thought I'd say.
