I rewatched the first one last night, and it felt unfinished somehow. I was prepared for the dark-ish tone this time around, and I still enjoyed the dancing/stripping scenes, though there weren't as many of them as I remembered. It's a weird film, in that I'm not really sure what it's trying to be.
Then I went to see the new one in the cinema today - and that one knew exactly what it was trying to be. It was a fairly ridiculous road movie, which focused a lot more on the stripping side than the first one, and was mostly just really good fun. There was one hilarious scene at a gas station that was worth the ticket price alone, and I liked that it gave all the characters a lot more time to develop along the way. Empire criticised it for being a cash-in with "none of the substance, interesting character arcs or charms" of the first one. I actually enjoyed it more and, though admittedly it was a lot lighter than the first one, though it had quite a strong message about doing what you love and loving what you do.
