Harvey on stage
Apr. 30th, 2015 09:24 pmI saw Harvey on stage years ago in Manchester and thought it was one of the best productions I'd ever seen. I'm also a big fan of the film and, in fact, watched it again towards the end of last year. So, I was quite excited when it turned up at the Haymarket, and very glad to get free tickets, courtesy of Corone.
Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed by the show on Tuesday night, though I think that's my fault rather than the production's, as I can't say there was really anything wrong with it. It contained no surprises, but that's because I know the story so well and it was a faithful production. I felt some of the characters were overdone, but I guess that's really to do with the period. The presentation of Elwood was a lot weirder and a lot less personable than Jimmy Stewart's - but then I think most people would be weirder and less personable when compared to Jimmy Stewart. And Harvey's presence was less strong and less frequently invoked than I would have liked - but then I guess he is quite difficult to pin down on stage.
It was fine, but I didn't feel there was anything special about it - though "how are you, Mr Wilson" remains my favourite moment.
