Storm Front
Sep. 27th, 2014 02:09 pmI know I've read the first Dresden Files book by Jim Butcher before. I'm pretty sure it was Corone or LaReineMisere (or both) who suggested it to me, and I also know that I never read any of the other books in the series - but I can't remember why, and I still don't know how to search my journal to try and find my review, whenever it was.
Anyway, LaReineMisere mentioned the series again recently, and I thought it might be a good one to try in audiobook format.
I was right.
It took me a little while to get into it, because of the narration style. Firstly, most audiobooks are edited to take out the breaths, swallows, random additional noises, etc, so you get an entirely smooth account. This wasn't the case with this one, and it turns out James Marsters swallows quite a lot when he's reading aloud! it took a while to get used to, but in the end made it all feel much more real. Also, Mr Marsters started out sounding very weary and quite bored, which was odd until the plot got to some more exciting bits and he livened up considerably - it was at that point that I realised he was *acting* - Dresden is pretty resigned at the start of the book!
I ended up really enjoying it, and feeling much closer to the protagonist than I often do in first person narrated audiobooks.
So I will definitely be carrying on this time!
