Unnatural Issue audiobook
Sep. 14th, 2014 05:24 pmIt seems I haven't reviewed the last audiobook I listened to, so let me rectify that.
The Elemental Masters series by Mercedes Lackey are set in the early 1900s and tell fantastical tales of young women finding love and adventure in an alternate England, where some people have the ability to do magic via one of the four elements. They're generally pretty predictable, and unashamedly romantic, but they have generally good female characters and an exciting plot, and pass the time on the commute or at the gym rather nicely.
I listened to a whole raft of them some time ago, but just recently discovered several more have come out since, so I downloaded them and will likely be alternating them with Reacher until I run out of one or both.
Unnatural Issue is the seventh in the series and takes place at the start of the First World War. It tells the story of Suzanne, brought up as a servant in her father's country house after he repudiates her at birth because her mother dies. Later, he decides to try and resurrect his dead wife by stealing Suzanne's body and inserting her mother's soul into it - and the main plot is about the group of magician's tasked with stopping him.
It's all very ridiculous, but the rules of the world are presented consistently, the characters are likeable, and there's plenty of derring-do and finding of true love.
