Mockingjay audiobook
Aug. 31st, 2014 09:05 amI've been listening to the Hunger Game series in conjunction with the films coming out so I thought I'd remind myself of Mockingjay before the November release.
I remembered the first half of the book being my favourite section of the series, and that was still true. I like the exploration of the effects of trauma on the various different characters, and the political aspect of propaganda and manipulation of public figures to the government's end.
I had forgotten how horrific the second half of the book was, though - I'm not keen on the assault on the capital, as it's very unpleasant in places, and actually serves very little purpose.
I do like the ending, though - and I know a lot of people don't. I think the combination of the final inciting incident, the working out of who is responsible for what, the assassination, and how Katniss chooses to spend her unexpected future are fantastically well constructed, extremely compelling, and a very satisfying conclusion to the series as a whole.
I'm really looking forward to watching Mockingjay Part One, since the film-makers have done such a good job with the series so far. I'm a bit uncertain about Part Two, though they've managed to convey the horror of the situations quite well previously without either of the films being gory - and I think the climax is going to be good.
