Dave and I spent a very enjoyable weekend in Kent, hoping to see the Perseids, but thwarted by the weather. We did, however, play some great games, including Elasund, which is a Catan off-shoot.
You can easily see the links with Settlers - resources determined by dice throw and building placement, competing for space on a crowded board, and winning by gaining ten victory points.
It's a lot more cut-throat, though, since you can destroy other players' buildings, and there's no trading, except with the bank.
It took quite a lot of brain power to figure out the best strategy and visualise the planning needed to get buildings in the right places, and I wasn't very good at it, but it was quite fun, and certainly an interesting variant on the Catan premise.
