Civilisation!
Jul. 22nd, 2014 08:40 pmThe awesomeness of Manorcon 2014 is now over, and with it the anxiety and pressure of running the Treasure Hunt (which went fine, but not as well as I'd hoped, after a whole year of anticipation - I know ought to be glad that it went fine and that I got some lovely feedback from people who don't know me and so weren't just saying it to make me feel better, but I still feel a bit of a sense of letdown - must attempt to get over myself)...
ANYWAY...
I only played five games over the course of the weekend (Lords of Waterdeep on Friday night, Civilisation and Bohnanza on Saturday, DungeonLords and Galaxy Trucker on Sunday), but they were all tremendously enjoyable - especially the two on Sunday.
But, Civilisation was the only one I hadn't played before, so it's the only one that gets a review.
It took seven hours to play and we stopped before we actually finished, but I really enjoyed it and thought I did pretty well. To begin with, I was a bit overwhelmed and couldn't really figure out what I was supposed to do but, instead of giving up or just coasting through it, I really paid attention and made a proper effort to get to grips with the mechanics and the strategy, and I was about middle of the field by the time we stopped playing. I'd really like to play again (and plan to on holiday in October) as I know some of the things I did wrong, and think I could play better next time. So, overall, a very enjoyable learning experience. Plus, one of my gamer friends (who is really, really good at games) said he thought from watching me play that my game fu has improved considerably, which was nice!
Manorcon - how I love thee!
