Edge of Tomorrow
Jun. 7th, 2014 06:28 pmDespite making no sense whatsoever, containing large amounts of wanton but severely sanitised violence, and having rather a cop-out ending, I actually really enjoyed Edge of Tomorrow.
Empire was right in describing it as basically a computer game, with one save point and a really tough end of level boss that takes multiple tries to defeat. Major Bill Cage levels up throughout the film - not only in terms of physical prowess and knowledge of the game ahead, but also in terms of character development and self-improvement. From weaselly, blackmailing coward to chiselled, courageous hero in hundreds of repetitive steps!
As for the drawbacks mentioned above, they weren't really drawbacks for me. I don't care if the premise of a film makes no sense whatsoever as long as it hangs together in and of itself, which this one did. While the sanitisation of violence does bother me in some respects, I'd far rather have bloodless battles than actual gore and dismemberment. And, while the ending felt a bit too neat, the last couple of shots did leave me with a massive grin on my face, so I'm not complaining.
I do have issues with some of Tom Cruise's attitudes and beliefs in real life, but I have to admit I have enjoyed the majority of his performances that I've seen (plus Jack Reacher facing off against Mad-Eye Moody was entertaining for its own reasons) and I love Emily Blunt, whose character managed to be female and kick-ass without just being a guy part played by a woman.
So, all in all, highly recommended if you're looking for some good, action fun of an afternoon.
