Echo Burning
Oct. 13th, 2013 10:40 amEcho Burning is the fifth in the Jack Reacher series (still at least 13 or 14 to go...) and was mostly a lot of fun. It took rather a long time to get going, but once the little girl came into it, things picked up considerably. The scene where Reacher is taught how to tack up a horse by a six-year-old is just hilarious!
I managed to figure out a certain amount of the plot before Reacher, but only the first twist, not the second, so the denouement was still exciting.
However, there was one aspect of the book that was really, really annoying. In the first two or three books, the thing that stood out most was the way all the characters kept adding "right?" to the end of their sentences. It dropped off in book four, and didn't really happen at all that I can remember in this one. What did happen, was that all the characters were very tight-lipped throughout. I'd quite like to get hold of an electronic copy of the book and count how many times the word "[someone] said nothing" appears - I suspect it might be approaching three figures, or at least that's what it felt like.
Now, one of Reacher's most annoying features is that he refuses to tell even his allies when he's worked something out - they will ask him questions and he will deflect or tell them to work it out for themselves. This is one of Child's tactics for keeping the reader in suspense, even when Reacher himself has figured out what's going on. This is somewhat annoying, but when its accompanied by time after time of the narrator stating "Reacher said nothing", it gets very wearing.
Hopefully, this was just a little habit Child got into for this one book - if it continues throughout the rest of the series, I might have a problem...
