Mystic and Rider review
Aug. 16th, 2006 02:09 pmIt was a strange circumstance that led me to read "Mystic and Rider" by Sharon Shinn - a fictional character from another book recommended it to me! Sharon Shinn is what Anita Blake the Vampire Hunter reads on long plane journeys, so I decided to give it a try. Robin Hobb and Anne McCaffrey added enthusiastic reviews on the back of the book, too, which was an encouraging sign.
What I found was that Sharon Shinn encompasses everything I love about Mercedes Lackey (well-drawn high fantasy world, varied and sympathetic characters, interesting interrelationships, action and romance) but without the adolescent melodrama that occasionally makes Lackey a bit wearing.
So, an enthusiastic thumbs up for Sharon Shinn, which is excellent as there are loads of books in her back for me to explore. My only problem is that I thought Mystic and Rider was a stand alone novel, and it turns out to be the first in a trilogy - the other two of which are available, but only in hardback.
So, what are the chances that I can resist buying them until they come out in paperback?
