alobearI couldn't even wait for the third series of the TV show to end before I started reading Part One of Book Three of A Song Of Ice And Fire, though I managed to watch the last two episodes before I reached those parts of the book. In actual fact, those parts weren't in the book, which has me confused. From what I remember of the TV show, the various storylines are well over half way through by the end of this book, but not yet complete - so am I safe to read the next one without risking spoilers?

Anyway, as ever, I really enjoyed the book, though I think a lot of the differences make the TV series better. Several characters are very different in the books, particularly Shae and Robb's wife, both of whom I much prefer in the TV series. They are much stronger and more interesting than the girlish characters in the books, though perhaps their book counterparts are more realistic, given the setting. I did like getting Jaime's point of view in this book - it was good to get a new narrator, and he's an interesting character, though he doesn't give much away, even in his own chapters.
The book gallops along in very entertaining fashion, and never ceases to amaze me with the complexity and range of the world and its inhabitants. How Martin ever manages to keep it all straight is utterly beyond me.
