The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman:
Second audiobook version.  Still extremely well read, but it's starting to lose me a bit.  Lyra seemed to turn into a petulant, annoying, selfish brat in this book.  I know she was always outspoken and precocious, but she at least had some decency and some sense in the first book.  Here, I just wanted to slap her a lot.  Will was an interesting addition - layered and complex, but pretty dark.  As was a lot of the plot.  I'm still going to listen to the third one to round it off, but this one was a bit more unpleasant than I'd have preferred and I still don't really know what it's getting at with the whole innocence/original sin thing.

Amercon II:
Yesterday, we spent the day with friends in Amersham, playing games.  It was tremendous fun and I got to play two games I'd never played before.
Risk Express - throw dice in an attempt to match the symbols on card representing different parts of the world.  Steal other people's cards by matching the symbols on them.  Cards are worth different numbers of points - the winner is the person with the most points when the whole world has been conquered.  I really enjoyed this (we played it twice at my request).  It's not exactly taxing, and is mostly based on chance, but it's fun.
Heckmeck - another dice game, this time involving domino-type tiles with worms on them.  You throw the dice, trying to get the highest score you can, and you collect the tiles by matching or exceeding the number printed on them.  You can steal other people's by matching their number and the winner is the person with the most worms when all the tiles are gone.  Another mostly chance-based game, but also rather fun.

I'm very sorry you didn't really enjoy The Subtle Knife.
As I've said before, His Dark Materials is one of my favourite things ever, I'd hoped you'd love it too, but we can't all love the same things, I guess :)
(I do have to agree that I was rather disappointed by the change in Lyra's character from book one though).

I now actually have games that I can bring on holiday in September! Admittedly, 2 of them are versions of Ticket to Ride (American and Scandinavian versions) because I love it with an almost unholy passion, but there's even a couple that other people might not have (unlikely as that might seem given the vast selection the others tend to bring :)).
