Two Comics
May. 3rd, 2024 02:08 pmI haven't been keeping up with my comics reading because I usually download them to my phone so I always have something to read on trains when I don't want to carry a physical book - but some of the files won't rotate or you can't zoom in, so I then get stuck because I can't see the small text clearly enough to read it.
Anyhoo - rather than giving up on a couple of what looked like great reads, I investigated reading them on my laptop and that worked fine.
The Well by Jake Wyatt tells the story of Lizzie, who lives on an archipelago shrouded in mist and at risk from the return of a giant sea monster that killed her parents and grandmother. When she steals some coins from a wishing well, she is plunged into a quest that may save the islands or cost her life.
There's an awesome snarky (but loving) grandfather, and even more awesome goat called Ferdinand, and a sweet queer romance that developed really well over the course of the book. There's also some great adventure, lots of peril, some interesting questions about morality and helping people, and an emotional throughline that's very effective.
I loved this!
Coming Back by Jessi Zabarsky is about two women who are separated when one of them has to go on a quest to solve the mystery of some harmful mist coming up from the depths of her library, while the other one is exiled from their village for raising a child on her own (which is against the rules of the society). It's about fear of the other, being entrenched in outdated traditions, the difficult of admitting when you're wrong, and ultimately the benefits of openness, tolerance and a willingness to learn and change.
A lot of it had no dialogue, and I'm not sure I entirely followed all the twists and turns, but it was wildly imaginative in scope and art style, and I loved the changing relationships and the way the characters grew over the course of the story.
Overall, very good.
