Sylvia musical
Feb. 10th, 2023 01:06 pmLast night, we went to see the Sylvia hip-hop musical at the Old Vic and it was really good!
With tiered steps/seating around three sides of the stage and the set made up entirely of a few movable blocks, the staging was excellent, giving the sense of multiple locations and using words and images projected onto a screen at the back to good effect.
The cast were enthusiastic and energetic, with great voices and really good dance moves. Beverley Knight was the standout as Emmeline Pankhurst, but everyone was great. It was emotive and passionate and interesting - though I understand a lot was left out and some things were altered without the reasoning being all that clear.
It was mostly black actors with a few white performers as well, so not as diverse as it could have been, but refreshing all the same.
I did think the first half was a lot stronger than the second half, as it seemed to lose momentum towards the end, but overall I really enjoyed it - certainly an interesting take on a historical life.
