The Choice
Feb. 8th, 2023 11:50 amThis is the last in the Dragon's Heart trilogy by Nora Roberts.
It was great to go back to Talamh and spend time with these characters again, especially in audiobook format, since the narrator is really good and I don't have to worry about how to pronounce anything!
I loved the fact that a lot of the book was 'the calm before the storm', allowing the characters some time to develop relationships, get some training in, enjoy the places and the people for a bit, before the dramatic climax.
The book totally made me cry on more than one occasion - but I think overall I agree with the choices the author made about where to lay the hurt.
The one thing that really annoyed me all the way through, though, was Breen's writing career. In the space of just over a year, with no background at all in writing - and whilst also battling an evil god, training to be the chosen one and discovering a whole magic realm - she somehow managed to write the first book in three completely different series (children's, YA and adult fantasy), find a great agent (the first one she approached) and sell all three books to a publisher for a great deal. It just made me mad! I can totally accept the dragons, the magic, the portals and all that - but not the trajectory of her writing career! It was particularly annoying because I'm querying agents at the moment - and it doesn't happen that way!
Anyway, that aside, I loved all the characters, the climax had emotional weight and a great sense of satisfaction and there was a decent amount of aftermath (though I did really want to see the Talamh wedding with the drag queens included) - so a great conclusion to a really fun trilogy overall.
