The Becoming
Aug. 29th, 2022 08:53 pmThis is the second in the series by Nora Roberts, about Breen Kelly, who discovers her heritage lies beyond a portal to a faerie realm, which is threatened by an evil god, who turns out to be her grandfather.
It was definitely the right choice to switch to the audiobook versions, after reading the first one in text, as the narrator was excellent. She dealt with all the Irish pronunciation for me and made all the characters with Irish accents distinct and very credible. It's a great cast of characters, though my favourite is Breen's best friend, Marco, who follows her to the faerie realm from the human one and finds both wonderful love and way to use his skills to help the cause.
The dog is awesome, though I still find it unbelievable that Breen would get a book contract for series of children's stories about a dog named Bollocks... Her writing journey is still by far the least credible aspect of the book, but I guess it's aspirational? I would certainly love to tap in to the ease with which she finishes her fantasy novel, as well as the enthusiasm from the first agent she submits anything to...
Still, I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting this world and very much look forward to the conclusion, which comes out in November.
