Dave decided he wanted to go to the theatre on his birthday and found a play called Best of Enemies, about a presidential debate in the 1960s. When he was looking for information about it online, he came across a film of the same name, which was about integration of schools in a small town in North Carolina in 1971. It sounded interesting, so we decided to watch it.

Taraji P Henson played Ann Atwater, a black activist on the side of integration. Sam Rockwell played CP Ellis, president of the local KKK chapter, obviously against integration. They were recruited to co-chair a diplomatic system called a charette, which involved groups of townsfolk debating the issues and then presenting a three-part resolution to a committee of 12 people, to vote on a decision.

It was really interesting, very well acted, and a good example of truth being stranger than fiction! During the climactic scene, I stated to Dave that there was no way it would have happened that way in real life - but apparently it did!
