Tarzan and Dresden
Jul. 14th, 2016 07:23 pmI went to see The Legend of Tarzan on Sunday, and it was okay. The whole thing was ridiculously attractive - people, animals, places, everything. There was some good action, and some fairly dreadful action (he may be very athletic, but he's not Spiderman...). There was some good writing and some dreadful writing (Jane started off quite promising, but was eventually reduced to damsel in distress...). There was some good representation and some dreadful representation (it felt like they were making an effort, but couldn't quite pull away from the stereotypes...). There were some laughs and some tears, but overall it felt like a missed opportunity.
This week, I listened to Dead Beat, the seventh in the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. I enjoy hanging out with Harry, in the guise of the excellent James Masters as narrator. I love Mouse, the dog; Harry's family dymanics have got interesting; Butters the ME makes for a wonderful side-kick, and there's awesome use of a tyrannosaurus rex. So, overall, I liked the book, and I am going to keep listening to the series - but aspects of it are starting to get a bit repetitive, which is a shame.
