I saw posters for We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver all over the underground last year and it intrigued me, but I thought I probably wouldn't like it. Then, a review by [livejournal.com profile] lareinemisere back in September 2006 highly recommended it and I decided to buy it on a whim when I ran out of books just before my birthday. Still not wholly enamoured by it, the book then sat in my book pile, consistently being pushed futher towards the back by books that were more appealing.

Then, on Friday, I pulled it off the shelf and shoved it in my back to take away for the weekend. Since then, I've been annoyed every time I've had to get off a train or go back to work after lunch because it meant I had to stop reading it.

This book is very, very good. Well written, intellectually stimulating, fascinating plot, cleverly manipulative - I would say it's the best work of literature I've read in quite some time. I thought the "shock" climax was too clearly telegraphed early on, which made it obvious and rather overblown - but the very last page gave me chills. Not a pleasant story by any means, and it was worrying just how much I related to the narrator, particularly early on, but an excellent read.
