Questions from lareinemisere:

1. I recall that in October you were about as impressed with your new job as I was with mine. How's it looking now?

To begin with, yes, I wasn't too keen.  I thought I was going from a joke of an institution to a well-respected company, but initially it looked like the management at the new place was not much better than the last place, and the company's chances of still being in existence in six months' time were slim to none.

However, six months in, things are vastly improved - both because I have found out more, and also because things within the company have changed quite a lot.  For a start, my job role was split in half shortly after I joined and all the icky bits were given to someone else.  At the moment, I'm being pretty much left to my own devices to come up with interesting and useful stuff to do (of which there is lots), but my manager doesn't believe in close monitoring or tough deadlines, so I'm managing myself and apparently impressing her with what I'm doing.

It has the potential to lead me into very bad habits of not really doing very much, but I'm managing to keep myself motivated mostly so far, I'm offering to help out other members of the team when my task list gets a bit low (which results in huge amounts of appreciation), and I'm enjoying working with pretty much all the other people in the office.

It's still *work* and, given the choice, I wouldn't work - but since I do have to work, I could to a lot worse than where I am now.  I'm trying desperately not to get complacent (as that is when things generally go awry) and keep doing good work at a steady pace.  I am very much enjoying not having to do any overtime, but I'm also glad there is enough to do that I'm not getting paranoid and bored out of my skull.  So, cautiously optimistic!

2. In what way(s) are you
like/unlike your parents, and is that a good or a bad thing (in your
 opinion)?

I have an agreement with my parents that I won't discuss them online.  So, suffice it to say - I am like them in many ways, and unlike them in many ways, and it is both good and bad!

3. You are the second biggest film fan I know. Do you have one
favourite film and, if so, what and why?

This one has required quite a bit of thought, and a discovery that I do not really know why I like things!

When I was quite young (10 or so), the film I would always turn to on a rainy Sunday afternoon was The Ten Commandments starring Charlton Heston as Moses.  Do not ask me why - I haven't the faintest clue - but I must have watched that film dozens of times.

In my early teens, my favourite film was probably Dirty Dancing - I remember I had a poster of Patrick Swayze on the ceiling above my bed, so at least I can pinpoint the reason for that one!

Around the time I left school, I could quote all the dialogue in the Chris O'Donnell/Charlie Sheen version of The Three Musketeers - again, I couldn't remotely tell you why I latched onto that one so strongly.  I guess it was just because it was so much fun and such an easy way to spend a couple of hours.

When I was living on my own in Oxford after university, my extended Lord of the Rings DVDs were most definitely my happy place.  I watched the films, listened to the commentaries, and viewed the accompanying documentaries over and over again.  I still love those films, and would probably point to them as my favourites - they're so rich and detailed and beautifully made, and they have such a range of different types of moments in them, that there's always something to please, whatever your mood.  The scope, the landscapes, the obvious love with which they were made - awesome stuff.

However, I haven't actually *watched* any aspect of my Lord of the Rings DVDs since watching Return of the King on Christmas Day 2010, so I'm not sure I could say I'm such a devotee as I used to be.

Somehow, I don't seem to rewatch films so much these days - there are too many other things to do with my time, and so much new stuff in terms of TV and films to discover.  Right at this very moment, for instance, I am thoroughly obsessed with The Hunger Games (again, I'm struggling to determine why), but I expect that will fade over time.  Basically, I'm a magpie - I discover something shiny and new and get totally wrapped up in it for a while, but then something newer and shinier comes along and I'm immediately immersed in that instead.

4. What would you do if you won
the lottery or received an unexpected enormous legacy?

This is always a tricky one, since I don't think you ever really know what you'd actually do in that situation.

I *think* I would give up work, possibly move slightly further outside London (but not into a giant house or anything) and just continue living my life in a similar manner to now - hopefully writing more, probably travelling more, perhaps taking up some new hobbies, but not really doing anything extravagant or silly.

5. What are you
most looking forward to for the rest of 2012?

There are tons of cool things coming up in 2012 that I'm looking forward to - but this one is easy.

21st May...

O2 Islington...

THE RASMUS ARE BACK IN TOWN!!!

My favourite band, who played my all-time favourite gig in Februrary 2009.  I get a googy grin on my face every time I catch sight of the ticket in my wallet - I am soooooo looking forward to that!

So, there you go!

I'm glad to hear the job is working out so well. Mine's still sub-optimal, but a hell of a lot better than it was in October, with further improvements imminent and others still possible. I live in hope...

I know what you mean about the new-and-shiny films, having had that with bands. ;)

It's fab when you have a gig you're really looking forward to, isn't it? I hope it exceeds your expectations (and that there's someone to put you back together when you *splodefromexcitement*). :)

I think I've watched The Lord of the Rings 4 or 5 times now but I still haven't listened to any of the commentaries. I really must give them a go some time (when I have a spare day or so XD)

The commentaries not so much - the making-of documentaries are really worth watching.
