Super 8 review
Aug. 8th, 2011 11:03 amI was a bit uncertain about Super 8 going in - it keeps getting five star reviews, but the monster-on-the-loose concept has never been one of my favourites. Indeed, there was rather more running, screaming and exploding than I would usually prefer, and I thought that detracted somewhat from the generally excellent character presentation and development. What prevented me from really investing in those characters, though, was my perceived disconnect between the late-70s kids adventure tone, and the modern effects and violence. The realism of the threat made the ways in which the kids acted and reacted unconvincing to me - I couldn't suspend disbelief amongst the flying debris, gunfire and blood splatter to imagine a group of thirteen-year-olds wouldn't be huddled in a corner somewhere, praying for it all to be over. Maybe my faith in plucky teenage film-makers isn't as strong as it should be.
