Thicker Than Water review
Apr. 26th, 2011 08:18 amThe fourth Felix Castor novel by Mike Carey is Thicker Than Water, and it really ramps things up a notch. It's instantly engaging, opening with arc plot and then moving smoothly into the book's main paranormal case. All the usual characters are present and correct, and Castor's sardonic narrative is firmly in place.
After reading the previous three books, I would have to say the comment link is that Castor always seems to get stomped on at least once (and usually more than once) and he never seems to know why it's happening or who's doing it. In fact, this seems to be his investigative technique - blundering around aimlessly until he pisses someone off enough to get beaten up, and then using that as the main clue as to who the bad guys are and where he should be sticking his nose further in. Let's face it - he's not the world's best detective.
As with most paranormal detective stories, this one turns out quite unpleasantly, but I expect that now, so it doesn't really bother me that much. This one is also pretty sad, as well as building up to an arc plot climax that's been coming since the start of book one. I think book five is going to be somewhat intense!
