A familiar cry - No depth!
Jun. 25th, 2006 10:30 pmI seem to be citing "lack of depth" a great deal lately with regard to films. Unfortunately, Fearless, which I went to see today with
cholten99 suffered from this problem more than most. It was a classic morality tale, predictable as anything, but this wouldn't have been a problem if it had presented its main characters as more than cardboard cutouts who moved from one scene to the next with no conviction or believable emotion. Even the fight scenes weren't all that impressive, since they were directed in the "let's get right into the fight" style, which means you can't really see what's going on.
The silliest thing about the outing was that I could have been spared two hours of mediocre entertainment, if only
cholten99 had known that Jet Li isn't actually Chow Yun-Fat. If only his reason for wanting to see the film had been real (ie the lead actor being Chow Yun-Fat), the film would probably have been much better!
The day's entertainment was saved by a return to the flat and the box set of Ealing comedies that came in the post yesterday. We watched "The Titfield Thunderbolt" over dinner, proving that a 54-year-old British comedy had more heart in its first five minutes than all the new films I've seen so far this year put together (with the exception of V For Vendetta).
