Yesterday, we screened the original Tron movie at the flat, and then went to the cinema to see the new one straight afterwards.

Despite the clunky graphics, I think the original still mostly stands up.  I really enjoyed seeing it again.

The new one was much longer, much prettier, and I initially thought trying much harder to be meaningful.  However, on reconsideration, the first one isn't as lighthearted and message-free as I perhaps think of it in my nostalgia-tinged view.  I think the tone of the new film actually matched the original quite well, though it did come across as a bit po-faced in places.

Still, it was truly beautiful (though, as usual, the 3D did nothing for me at all, and I would have preferred to see it without), and Olivia Wilde was delectable in black leather and a cropped black hairdo.  I thought perhaps the final section took things a bit too far in terms of suspension of disbelief, but who am I to question what is and is not possible in the world of Tron?

Overall, the film wasn't as much fun as I'd hoped, but I think it was mostly quite good.

I don't often admit this, but... I never saw the original Tron.

That's probably because you're too young! :o)

Tron was one of the staples of my childhood - along with Labyrinth.

I think coming to it now would be a mistake - you had to be there with it in the 80s for it still to look good now. If you watch if for the first time now, it'll just look really crap.
