Oh Bryan, oh Bryan, why hast thou forsaken us?
I was worried when I found out that Bryan Singer wasn't going to direct the third X-Men film, but I thought - all the main actors are back, how bad could it be?
The answer is, that it isn't *bad* - but that doesn't mean that it's good.

It was a case of too much and not enough. All the characters were there, plus far too many new ones, but none of them got enough screen time or enough depth to make you care about them. What was most disappointing was that this applied even to the original characters I already knew and loved. Some of them died, and I just didn't care.
The story moved along, there were impressive set pieces (though the bridge section was completely ludicrous), some of the themes were quite interesting - but there was no joy, no spark, no heart to it. Nothing was explored in any reasonable depth, all of the supposedly funny bits fell totally flat - it was just... empty.
Oh well, I guess I'll just have to apply the Serenity Failsafe - re-watch the first two great movies and forget the third one ever happened.
Also as [Bad username or site: cholten 99 @ livejournal.com] said, it did make me look forward to Superman more than I had before. If the absence of Bryan Singer makes that much difference to a successful franchise, then his presence on the Superman film may just make it worth a look. Besides, I want to see what he abandoned my favourite superheroes for, and it had better be good!
