Fantastic day is fantastic!
Aug. 29th, 2010 07:52 am Yesterday, we broke in our 2010 National Trust membership cards with a trip to The Vyne in Basingstoke.
Everything about the day was wonderful (apart from the fact that one of the people invited was unable to come due to illness - boo!)
After a week of dreary rain, the weather was glorious. The journey was easy and mostly traffic-jam free, and everyone ended up at the right place at the right time. We had a lovely long walk through the grounds - formal gardens, wild gardens, open fields, wetlands, woodland trails. Lunch was a picnic and involved sharing of everyone's contributions, so we all got an interesting range of food. The house itself was interesting - partly because it contained some absolutely hideous modern furniture that we all enjoyed being horrified by, and partly because we all took part in the children's activity of seeking out 16 plush baby rats that were hidden around the place. I only found 12 myself, but as a group we found all 16 (the last only because one of the staff told us where it was, though). Then, we repaired to a very nice local pub and played two highly enjoyable games of Dominion before heading home.
Best of all? Fantastic company - thanks to everyone who came and made it one of the highlights of my summer.
