LoveFilm continued its trend of sending me wildly contrasting films again this week.

Frost/Nixon was very well done, with an effective mock-documentary flavour and a strong cast.  I knew nothing about the interviews beforehand, so it was an educational experience for me (assuming it was even remotely accurate, that is), and I got quite tense leading up to the final session where the subject of Watergate was tackled.  I thought the reversal of power between the two main characters was maybe a little abrupt, but the film as a whole was both gripping and entertaining.

Monster House would probably have scared the crap out of me if it had been live action (though I have to admit I am an incredible wuss, so that may not be saying much).  As it was, it was just the right side of scary, along with exciting, sad and also funny in places.  The three kids were all fairly appealing, and the visuals of the possessed house were imaginative and creepy.  I'm a bit worried that two policemen and a relatively innocent dog were never seen again, though their demise was not established outright, and the emergence of another victim at the end suggests they might have made it out alive somehow.  Still, considering the stuffed toy abuse, public drunkenness, exploitation of circus employees and 45-year self-imposed exile of one character, this was not usual animated fare, and all the more effective for it.
