The Safehold series by David Weber just keeps getting better and better.  By Heresies Distressed is the third book and I can't wait to get my teeth into the fourth, despite the fact that I'm now over 1500 pages into the saga.  This instalment had lots of rather tense action (which I'm sometimes not keen on, since it has a tendency to make me skim rather than reading the text properly) and also managed to suprise me several times with unexpected plot twists.

As with the earlier books, the best and worst thing about the books is that the characters on all sides of the conflict are well-rounded, with sensible motivations.  This is excellent, as it presents the characters as entirely believable, but it makes for quite anxious reading, as I really liked a lot of the supposed "bad guys" and didn't necessarily want them to be defeated, even though I love the heroes too.
