The End of Faith
Mar. 1st, 2006 04:15 pmSome time ago,
cholten99 and I watched a documentary about the inconsistencies of Christianity. It was pretty good, and one of the people interviewed was a guy called Sam Harris, who came across as being both intelligent and interesting. A few weeks later, we listened to a podcast of a lecture given by the same guy, promoting his new book, "The End of Faith". Again, he came across as intelligent and interesting, so I bought the book.
A lot of what he has to say is both intelligent and interesting, but unfortunately he also falls into the "anyone who disagrees with me is a total idiot" category, which really hurts his case in my opinion. I agree with his basic premise, but it's so difficult to find the rational argument beneath the vitriolic arrogance. Egomaniacal atheists who broadcast the opinion that they're vastly superior to anyone of faith really annoy me - even more so than evangelical religious people in some ways.
I'm persevering with the book for the moment, because I want to see where he goes with it, and it *has* prompted me to look at certain things in a different light, but I'm certainly not enjoying it as much as I thought I would.
