alobearLast night was my fourth trip to see Les Miserables (but my first in about 12 years), Dave's third, and our first together.
About 15 minutes in, I was in tears because I remembered how much I loved it.
However, as with all things both amazing and over-familiar, the off-notes stand out more than the good bits, because I already know I love the show, so all that's left is to rip it apart.
It's not in a big theatre any more, so it seemed rather small overall, though the cast did a good job of not letting that interfere with the grandeur of the big chorus numbers.
The musical arrangement was a bit messy - Dave's right that some of the punchier songs flowed together too well and lost some of their impact, and the music drowned out the singers occasionally at inopportune moments, most particularly in Javert's last song, which is one of my favourites.
The biggest problem was Valjean, though, because he has the hardest part and has to carry a lot of the emotion of the show, and the guy playing him just didn't quite have the range for it. God On High was even more painful than usual because he struggled a bit with the highest notes.
All in all, though, it was still Les Mis, it was staged brilliantly, for the most part the cast was excellent, and On My Own is still my favourite song of all time. Can we go every Friday???
