Across The Universe review
Mar. 28th, 2009 10:29 pmThis week's rental DVD was Across The Universe - a semi-romantic, semi-batshit musical based around Beatles music. So, the music was always going to be good, and the main plot was both engaging and emotive. I liked most of the characters and got almost totally sucked in to thier trials and tribulations as the story followed the turbulence of America in the 60s, mostly focusing on protests against the Vietnam War.
However, as befits some of the stranger Beatles songs, there were several very trippy, psychadelic, and downright weird scenes that rather detracted from the emotional heart of the story and pulled me right out of the narrative. I can kind of see what the director was trying to do, but some of it was just too darn strange for me!
Overall, I really enjoyed it - the main plot was strong enough to get me past the weirder sections, and the singing was great.
