Castles in the Air review
Jan. 20th, 2009 09:08 pmCastles in the Air by Judy Corbett was lent to me by a work colleague, who has suddenly decided to start passing on all the books she reads. This has so far proved really good, and not too taxing on my book pile as she reads a lot more slowly than I do.
This book is about a couple acquiring and restoring a sixteenth century Welsh castle, and certainly succeeds in its purpose of making me want to go there (they get a great deal of their restoration money from renting out rooms and offering the castle as a wedding venue). The narrative is well-written, personable and really interesting, and the narrator comes across as exactly the sort of person you'd like showing you round the castle in question.
The section about the ghosts in the middle was unexpected and unbelievable, and jarred somewhat compared to the rest, but it was all absorbing and entertaining, and made for a very enjoyable read.
