The House of Mirth review

alobearMany thanks to lareinemisere for lending me The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton. She described Wharton as "an evil Jane Austen", but she most reminded me of Henry James, though I guess you could use the same description for his books, so the comparison still stands.
Essentially, this was very well written, and an entertaining portrait of American society at the end of the 19th century. I was warned not to expect a happy ending, which was a good thing all told. I didn't particularly like the main character, so her fate wasn't particularly upsetting, but overall it was still a good read, due to the excellence of style and an involving premise.
Two more in the collection to go, but I think I'm going to read something else first.
