Now or Later review
Oct. 8th, 2008 12:58 pmDave and I went to see an excellent play last night - Now or Later at the Royal Court in Sloane Square. It was only 75 minutes long, but it was superbly acted and staged, cramming in an awful lot of intense interaction in such a short time.
It was about the son of a presidential candidate, set in his hotel room on election night, and revolving around various people's reactions to a conceivably anti-Islamic prank he'd pulled at college the night before. There were only six characters - the candidate and his wife, the son and his friend, and two of the campaign staff. Some of the dialogue was a little clunky, but overall it was very well written, and the son in particular gave an excellent performace, particularly considering he was on stage for all but about four of the 75 minutes.
The play had a lot to say about American politics and foreign policy, but also the effect of the public spotlight on the people surrounding a presidential candidate, all of which is rather topical. A very good evening's entertainment - and we were home by 10pm!
