Mega reviews update!
Oct. 10th, 2007 12:03 pmI am very behind with reviews - time to catch up!
Riding - I stepped out of the flat on Sunday morning and thought, "I'd like to ride Joe today." I got to the stable and was told that I was riding Joe. He's lovely - forward-going and very responsive. He was a little lethargic at times today (apparently he's been on holiday for the last few weeks and is only just getting back into the swing of things. He's also very strong on the reins, which meant my shoulders were sore the day after. Overall, though, I think he's my favourite of the horses I've ridden in A lessons so far, and I'd like to ride him a lot more.
Horse Of The Year Show - this was fantastic. The junior showjumping was absolutely nailbiting, with the last few each beating the one before by a few seconds. The Friesan dressage was so impressive as to look very tame to anyone who hasn't tried to get horses to move in unison. The Pony Club Mounted Games were complete pandemonium - the commentator was laughing so hard at one point that he couldn't speak for several minutes. The Metropolitan Police display was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen - at one point they actually removed their *saddles* while travelling at a canter and went over a series of jumps holding the saddles above their heads. I am definitely getting tickets again next year.
Day Watch - if I had only one word to describe this film, it would be frenetic. The pace never slowed down, but I felt they ignored a lot of the cool stuff from the first film, and it all seemed rather pointless by the end. I enjoyed it, but I don't think it was as good as Night Watch.
Books - since 12th September, I have read:
1602 by Neil Gaiman - just as good the second time around
Williamsburg Saga by Elswyth Thane - seven books that make up on of my all time favourite series. They follow a family through all its trials, tribulations, and especially romances from the American War of Independence to the Second World War. The first two are defintiely among my top five books, though the rest aren't quite so good. What was interesting this time round was that my attitude to several of the characters has changed since the last time I read them several years ago, but I still love the series as a whole.
The Great Game by Dave Duncan - a triliogy of fantasy books that I've owned for a long time, but not read for years. I remembered very little of the plot as I went along, but still thoroughly enjoyed it.
Must get back to reading some new stuff now, though!
