Went to see Harry Potter and The Goblet Of Fire on Friday night, with [livejournal.com profile] cholten99 and [livejournal.com profile] weaselbitch. It was really busy, and they sat on the front row, but I couldn't handle that, so I went to sit on my own further up - sorry for being antisocial, guys!

The books have been getting worse and the films have been getting better, in my opinion, so I had high hopes for this one, and I wasn't disappointed.

Getting the problems out of the way first - the beginning was very rushed and I wished we could have seen more of the Quidditch. I think it would have been a bit confusing for anyone who hadn't read the book, purely because there's so much in it and certain things weren't explained in enough detail. Fleur, Cedric and Victor didn't get enough characterisation and all the tasks were too focused on what Harry was up to. Lastly, Lord Voldemort wasn't in the least bit scary, which was a bit of a shame. David Tennant, as Barty Crouch Junior, was far more creepy - he does seem to be the man of the moment!

However, it was inevitable that loads was going to have to be cut out (and I think the book could have been severely edited and would have been better for it), and overall the choices they made were good ones. Hermione's house elves campaign and the whole Rita Skeeter subplot annoyed me in the book so I was glad they were gone, and it's understandable that the focus in the tournament should be on Harry.

The effects were brilliant, all the new characters were spot on (especially Mad-Eye Moody), and the relationships were very well portrayed. I thought the anxiety over inviting someone to the ball was excellently done, and the falling-out between Harry and Ron over Harry's name coming out of the cup was convincing. The whole thing was exciting and action-packed, but the smaller emotional aspects of the story weren't ignored or overshadowed.

All three of the main actors have improved no end since the first film, and I very much look forward to the future instalments, if this one is the new benchmark.
