Nimona - comic book
Oct. 3rd, 2023 01:39 pmAfter watching the Nimona movie a couple of months ago, I decided to give the original comic a try - and it was surprisingly different!
The main difference was in Ballister's backstory (which was made a lot more complicated in the movie, adding several more layers to his relationship with Goldenloin) and initial presentation (in the comic he actually is - sort of - a villain, rather than being misunderstood). Plus, while Nimona's origins were the same, the legend around that was explained more fully in the movie - if I hadn't seen that first, I think I would have been a bit confused by the comic.
The dynamic between Ballister and Nimona was still really great in the comic and there were quite a few different or additional aspects that were also interesting and engaging. I didn't feel the history and ultimate conclusion of the relationship between Ballister and Goldenloin was explored as fully as it could have been in the comic, though I liked Goldenloin's shift in attitude over the course of the story more than how it was presented in the movie.
The art style worked well for what needed to be portrayed - and all the action sequences in particular were very effective.
Overall, I enjoyed both - and it's worth watching/reading both, as they are quite different.
