A Day Of Fallen Night by Samantha Shannon is the prequel to The Priory of the Orange Tree, which I really enjoyed a few years ago. So I was excited to get back to this world - and I think the only reason I wasn't completely pulled into it to be lost for weeks on end was my fault and not the book's fault.

It's a sweeping epic fantasy story, charting the lives of three women (and multiple other characters in their periphery), all of whom believe they have an important part to play in preventing the return of a terrible monster that threatened the world in times past.

It's a rich world, with wonderful and heartbreaking emotional arcs, vivid landscapes and complex, layered relationships. The sacrifices the characters make in the name of duty are often wrenching, but the importance of family and connection that lies at the heart of all their lives shines through to add really impactful moments amongst the death, destruction, fighting and fear.

But it's very long. And that's what I mean about it being my issue that I didn't maintain the level of connection to the story that I would have liked. There's a lot going on at the moment for me, and I'm very tired, and this book deserved more from me in terms of attention and focus.

I did very much enjoy it, though, overall!
