I'm not normally one for paranormal Westerns - but a friend gave me The Shadow series by Lila Bowen when she was doing some clearing out, so I decided I'd give the first one - Wake of Vultures - a try.

Nettie Lonesome is a young, mixed-race woman, growing up in a harsh land full of hard people, none of whom give a damn about her. Then, she kills a monster and starts seeing more of them all over the place. When a ghost lands her with a vendetta quest, she is forced to journey out into the world to try and sort things out.

Along the way, she learns a lot about the world, about other people and about herself.

Nettie engaged me right from the start - she's a great protagonist and I loved her arc of discovery. The supernatural elements of the book are interesting, there's a wide range of great characters, lots of awesome horses - and the narrative voice is very distinctive.

I really didn't think I was going to like this book - and I actually rather did.
