Flotsam

Flotsam is the first in the Peridot Shift series by RJ Theodore, telling the story of Talis and her motley crew aboard the airship Windsabre. It initially feels very Firefly in terms of the ensemble cast and their usual routine of taking sometimes-less-than-legal courier and salvage jobs from shady characters on a gangland planet.

It takes a turn towards the more esoteric, once the gods, a magic ring and the origins of the Cataclysm come into play.

Talis and her crew are fun characters to spend time with, and some of their personal backstories have a lot of depth. But it does feel as if they are rather at the mercy of more powerful factions throughout most of the book, instead of them being at the forefront of proactive action. Talis also seems to switch plans and allegiances very quickly, based on various people telling her things that she does nothing to verify.

It's an interesting world and a good set of characters, but I didn't feel engaged enough with the arc plot to want to read more of the series.
