I finally got around to trying the computer game, Unpacking, this week - and just finished it on day three!
All it consists of, in essence, is unpacking boxes and finding suitable places to put all the stuff, in various rooms, apartments and houses. But there's so much more to it than that. The graphics are great, the music is lovely, the act of taking out all the things and putting them away is immensely satisfying. But it also tells the story of the character you never actually see, but whose life you get to know intimately through their possessions and their living spaces.
The date at the start of each level gives a sense of time moving on, and the type of living space gives you information about what's going on, as do the types of possessions you unpack - and which ones carry over from one move to the next.
There were one or two moments of annoyance when the game told me I'd put various things in the 'wrong' place (I didn't always agree with its assessment and sometimes couldn't work out how to fix the problem, in order to carry on), but there was help in the internet when needed, and it was really only once or twice.
I really loved this game - I just wish there was more of it, because I could happily play it for months on end! I really hope they bring out a sequel!
