It's been three years since I read the 12th Elemental Masters book by Mercedes Lackey, and it seems the break was worthwhile, because I didn't have much good to say about that one - and this one, The Bartered Brides, I generally enjoyed.

The Victorian London setting is vividly portrayed, with the overlay of elemental magic adding distinction to the world-building. It was fun spending time with Nan and Sarah, their birds, and the Watsons again, though the plot was very dark and grim in places, which I guess is understandable since it's based on the tale of Bluebeard.

It was a short, easy listen, with good characters and an intriguing story.
