I've been reading a lot of comics lately - there was an article in Empire about long-running graphic series and I decided to buy a bunch of first volumes to give them a try.
It wasn't a wholly successful experiment.
I'm really enjoying Y:The Last Man, and will review it properly once I get to the end - but I wasn't so keen on any of the others.
100 Bullets is a series of one-shots based on the same premise - a shadowy guy approaches someone and gives them an 'untraceable' gun and 100 bullets, and says they can do what they want with them and won't be pursued. It was quite interesting, but none of the characters were very likeable, and all of the stories were a bit grim, so I won't be continuing with that.
Concrete is about a guy who's been turned into stone - a bit like Fantastic Four's Thing, only not written as a superhero story. He just bimbles about, interacting with people, sometimes helping them, sometimes just doing random stuff. It's an interesting idea - but I actually found it quite dull, and the character wasn't engaging enough for me to get involved in his life.
Faker is a one-off, rather than a long series - a weird, quite trippy tale by Mike Carey about some college students who take a dangerous substance and accidentally create a being based on their collective memories. It was quite good but, again, none of the characters were very likeable, and it was a bit grim, so overall I wasn't that keen.
