Paper Towns and Conflict of Honors
Jun. 15th, 2015 06:02 pmI don't really know what to say about Paper Towns. I'd like to like John Green's books more, and I did like this one more than Looking for Alaska, but I didn't really get into it. It's about learning to imagine other people more complexly, but I think I wanted that message to be more subtly expressed, rather than having the main character monologue it straight onto the page part way through. Some of the character interactions were entertaining, and there were bits and pieces of the plot that I liked, but it felt very nebulous - the characters didn't feel real to me, and the plot felt very contrived. I'm definitely not the target audience, though, and I know there are a lot of people out there who love it, so I guess it does speak to them.
Conflict of Honors is another book set in the Liaden Universe, written by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. I enjoyed listening to it, though I thought the narrator was a bit over the top with his accents and emphasis in places. There was a range of interesting characters, and the overall development of the relationship between the two protagonists was well done. I didn't relate to the characters as much as some of the others in the series, but it was fun overall.
