Midnight Tides by Steven Erikson is the fifth Malazan Book of the Fallen book, and definitely the best so far.  It's almost stand-alone, since I think it includes only a couple of characters who have been in the series before, and it combines tremendous power, occasional horror, ridiculous humour and really memorable characters.

There's a quote on the back that sums it up far better than I ever could:

"Marvellously gripping... a riveting read, punctuated as ever with pockets of humour and fantastically individual characters."

That is absolutely spot on and why I love this series so much - its scope is huge, but so is its heart, and the tiniest detail is just as significant and compelling as its most far-reaching global consequences.

I've been told that the next in the series doesn't quite live up to this last one, so I'm going to have a good long break before continuing, so as not to ruin it with unrealistic expectations.
