The last line of the Empire review (two stars) for Robocop says, "Oh, if it only had a brain."
The first line of the SFX review (four and a half stars) for Robocop says, "The new Robocop has an impressive brain."
How is a girl to know who to believe? Well, I guess she has to go to the cinema, watch the film and decide for herself. So I did.
I would place the film somewhere in the middle (three and a quarter stars) and credit it with a middling amount of brain. I would not go so far as to agree with SFX that "it is an excellent, intelligent SF drama" but I also don't agree with Empire that it has "No heart, no balls, no funny bone."
I agree with SFX that Michael Keaton and Gary Oldman were both excellent, particularly the latter - so much so that, towards the end, he totally convinced me, along with Michael Keaton's character of something that turned out to be a complete bluff. But I also agree with Empire that Samuel L Jackson was less than stellar.
I mostly enjoyed it, but it's not something I would go out of my way to recommend.
