Just got back from a very enjoyable outing with Simon H - very yummy Thai food, followed by a trip to the cinema to see Elysium.
I found this highly enjoyable, despite its ridiculous plot and intermittently shaky camera work. I mean, what's the point of a well choreographed fight, if you can't tell what's going on? I've heard a lot about how the film makes no sense but, once you buy into the premise, I think it actually hangs together very well (though some of the computer stuff towards the end had Simon giggling uncontrollably, so I guess it must have been a bit silly).
Sharlto Copley made for a suitably psychotic bad guy, with an icy Jodie Foster providing a contrasting evil mastermind pulling the strings. Matt Damon is always good value for money, though he wasn't given much to get his teeth into with this role - it was mostly running and fighting. There were a couple of icky moments, but they were well telegraphed enough that I missed them entirely, and the action was fast-paced, with enough character development and depth to make you care.
And Michael Shanks was in it!! He had two whole lines, and was billed in the credits as CCG Agent Number 3, but he was there!!
So, if you're looking for a fairly decent sci-fi actioner with plenty of thrills and a sledge-hammer message of social inequality, you can't go far wrong with Elysium.
