Fourth year of Annie-and-Dave-Con
Jun. 23rd, 2013 03:45 pmYesterday was Annie-and-Dave-Con 2013, which was a great success!
I played five games throughout the day, but only one was new to me - a fiendishly simple game called Dobble. It involved staring at round cards with various symbols on them and trying to find the matching symbols on two different ones. This turned out to be surprisingly difficult, and was not made any easier by the fact that you had to do it before anyone else in the game. I've always thought I wasn't very good at games where you have to use your brain under pressure and I really dislike most of them. However, Dave's recent acquisition, Asteroyds, has proved an exception to this rule, and Dobble turned out to be another. I wouldn't want to play more than a few rounds at a time, but it was good fun, and a great game to act as a filler in a break between longer ones. Thanks for bringing it, Andy!
Pandora's Star by Peter F Hamilton:
I feel like I've been listening to this audiobook for most of my natural life, and I finally finished it on the way back from the gym yesterday morning. (Note to self: getting up at 7am to take the car to the garage and then run/walk to the gym, do a 30 minute workout, following by running/walking back, then travelling into central London to play games from noon to midnight does not a productive Sunday make.) Anyway, I mostly enjoyed this book, despite its incredible length and complexity. I lost concentration a couple of times, and bits of it were somewhat beyond me, but the characters were engaging enough to keep me listening, and I will get round to listening to the sequel at some point, as I do want to find out what happens next.
