I came across The Keeper Origins trilogy by JA Andrews because all three books were on special offer on Audible for one credit, so I figured it would be worth giving them a try.

The first volume, Dragon's Reach, tells the story of Sable, who starts out trapped in thieves' gang, trying to keep her sisters safe after their town is destroyed by raiders and their parents killed.

Through various twists and turns, Sable ends up joining an acting troupe and discovering a talent for performance, which leads to her becoming involved in lots of political intrigue amongst the upper echelons of the church.

In a way, this book is very much setup for the rest of the series - and it ends in a way that leads directly into the meat of the plot in book two.

That said, it's also very well written, extremely involving, highly entertaining and a really great read all round. I love the cast of characters, I love the found family aspect, I love all the trials and tribulations Sable faces while trying to hold everything together.

The magic system is interesting, the politics are intriguing, all the different relationship dynamics are well drawn, and I zoomed through 20+ hours of audiobook in quite a short time period. (It helps that the narrator is Kate Reading, whose voice I know well from the excellent Lady Trent series.)

I'm really looking forward to following her into the next book, as well as finding out what happens to everyone else, as I'm sure most of the other characters will still be in it, despite where the first book ends up.
